GitHub, a Microsoft-owned platform, announced the launch of ‘Agent HQ’ at its annual Universe 2025 conference held on October 28th in San Francisco. This significant development marks a new era for software development, transforming GitHub into an open ecosystem where developers can unify and manage diverse artificial intelligence collaborators. With a global community of over 180 million developers, GitHub is positioning Agent HQ as the central operating system for the AI software revolution.
Agent HQ is designed to integrate AI-powered coding agents from major providers, including OpenAI (with its Codex model), Google, Anthropic (with Claude), Cognition, and xAI. This platform will allow developers to assign, steer, and monitor the work of multiple AI agents simultaneously within a single, unified interface. This “mission control” approach aims to bring order to the burgeoning field of AI innovation, enabling humans and AI to code together more effectively.
Previously, GitHub primarily served as a collaboration hub for human developers. With the introduction of Microsoft’s proprietary AI coding tool, Copilot, GitHub observed that “80% of new developers use Copilot within their first week,” underscoring AI’s growing centrality in development. Agent HQ extends this by supporting collaboration not just between human developers and Copilot, but also with a diverse array of “AI developers” from various companies.
Initial access to Agent HQ will be available to GitHub Copilot Pro+ users via VS Code Insiders, starting this week with OpenAI Codex integration. A broader rollout to include more agents and general Copilot subscribers is planned for the coming months. The platform will offer features such as granular branch controls, custom agent creation through AGENTS.md files, and identity management to track agent contributions.
Kyle Daigle, GitHub COO, emphasized the platform’s goal to “bring a little bit of order to the chaos of innovation,” noting that with many different agents, there are numerous ways to kick off asynchronous tasks, and Agent HQ aims to consolidate this. Industry leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have reportedly commented positively on this native integration, anticipating improved workflows and collaboration for millions of developers. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, OpenAI Codex product lead Alexander Embiricos, and Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger were among those who jointly announced collaborations with GitHub at the event.
