TLDR: Gilbane Building Co. has entered a seven-figure agreement with Trunk Tools to deploy AI agents, including TrunkSubmittal, TrunkText, and TrunkSOP, across over 200 projects nationwide within the next two years. This strategic move follows a successful pilot of TrunkSubmittal, which demonstrated significant improvements in efficiency, reduced resubmissions by nearly 50%, and enhanced the quality of project documentation.
Gilbane Building Co., a prominent construction contractor, has announced a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence capabilities through a new enterprise-wide partnership with Trunk Tools. The agreement, valued at a seven-figure sum, will see the deployment of Trunk Tools’ AI agents—TrunkSubmittal, TrunkText, and TrunkSOP—across more than 200 Gilbane projects nationwide over the next two years. This initiative underscores Gilbane’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to drive innovation and efficiency in the construction sector.
The decision to roll out these AI agents follows a successful pilot program involving TrunkSubmittal, an AI-enabled assistant designed to streamline the submittal process on construction projects. Launched at ENR FutureTech in May and made generally available on July 1, TrunkSubmittal was quickly adopted across 30 active Gilbane projects during the summer. In a mere three months, Gilbane teams utilized TrunkSubmittal to review over 2,000 submittals, leading to a notable improvement in the quality of documents submitted to architects.
Trunk Tools’ data from projects using TrunkSubmittal revealed that a significant portion of initial submittals were non-compliant: 72% were non-compliant, 25% were partially compliant, and only 3% were fully compliant. By identifying and flagging these issues early in the process, Gilbane teams were able to substantially reduce the number of resubmissions, effectively shortening cycle times by nearly 50%. This proactive approach ultimately helped Gilbane prevent requests for information (RFIs), mitigate potential delays, and address quality issues before they escalated.
Adam Jelen, CEO of Gilbane Building, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in the industry, stating, ‘AI is a transformative force that is shaping the future of construction, and we’re committed to leading the industry forward through innovation.’ He added that ‘Trunk Tools has already shown it can deliver real impact on our jobsites. Our enterprise-wide rollout ensures every Gilbane team has access to this technology that is proven to support smart, efficient work in the field.’
Heidi DeBenedetti, COO of Gilbane Building Co., highlighted the practical benefits of the AI agents, noting, ‘It helps us optimize efficiency, automates bureaucratic workflows, and allows our teams to focus on what they do best: building.’ Gilbane Superintendent Andy Roy praised TrunkText and TrunkSubmittal as ‘game-changers for how we operate,’ while Rawle Sawh, Director of Operations Technology, stated that Trunk Tools ‘drastically’ improved the jobsite experience and positioned Gilbane ‘ahead of the curve in technology adoption and service quality provided to its customers.’
