NREL and Google Partner on AI Hackathon to Address Data Center Energy Demands

TLDR: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Google recently co-hosted an Artificial Intelligence Hackathon, bringing together leading researchers to explore how generative AI and large language models can mitigate the energy challenges posed by the rapid growth of U.S. data centers.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Google have joined forces to host a groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence Hackathon aimed at tackling the escalating energy demands of U.S. data centers. The two-day event, held on June 17–18 in Washington, D.C., convened approximately 50 leading experts, including six NREL computational and data scientists, from nine U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories.

The hackathon’s primary objective was to leverage Google’s advanced generative AI and large language model tools, specifically Gemini, to address critical energy limitations impacting the swift expansion of data centers across the United States. Participants engaged in hands-on experimentation, applying cutting-edge AI capabilities to real-world problems spanning geospatial analytics, energy systems, data center optimization, and digital-twin development.

The initiative successfully showcased the immense potential of generative AI in accelerating scientific research, automating complex tasks, and generating novel insights. Through collaborative exploration of various identified challenges, Google gained valuable perspectives on how national laboratories envision utilizing their AI tools, particularly for specialized applications such as geospatial reasoning, digital twins, and autonomous engineering.
